Tanren (forging, tempering through disciplined repetition) describes the systematic shaping of the body, structure, and mind under controlled stress. Tan means to forge metal. Ren means to refine or temper. In traditional Okinawa Karate usage, tanren is not performance or just conditioning but transformation.
