NEWS UPDATE FROM OKINAWA

HANSHI ZENPO SHIMABUKURO

RECOGNIZED BY OKINAWAN GOVERNMENT

We have received confirmation that Hanshi Zenpo Shimabukuro, head of Seibukan Shorin-ryu, has been recognized by the Okinawan Prefectural Government through a special designation. He has been recognized by the Okinawa Prefectural Government as a holder of an Intangible Cultural Property, through a special designation outside the standard process.

This recognition did not come through the standard selection process. Instead, it acknowledges his role as a direct holder of the Kyan lineage.

This distinction matters.

The regular selection process typically takes place every five years. From those nominated, only a small number are chosen.

The first group of designees included Shoshin Nagamine, Katsuya Miyahira, Meitoku Yagi, Seiyu Shinjo, and Shinpo Matayoshi.

Over the years, others have been designated from 1997 through 2025, including:

Kotaro Iha, Ryuko Tomoyose, Shugoro Nakazato, Tsunenobu Nakazato, Katsuya Miyahira, Yukimori Wakugawa, Seitoku Ishikawa, Takenobu Uehara, Yoshio Hichiya, Masahiro Nakamoto, Morio Higaonna, Kiyokichi Iha, Masanari Kikugawa, Shintoku Takara, Tsutomu Nakahodo, and Morinobu Maeshiro.

This gives us context.

Recognition at this level has always been reserved, deliberate, and tied to preservation—not popularity.

Why This Matters

In Okinawa, lineage is not simply a matter of rank or affiliation. It reflects transmission—what has been received, preserved, and carried forward.

The designation points to that responsibility.

Chotoku Kyan’s teachings were not meant to be reshaped for appearance. They were passed down through people—through bodies—through practice.

To be recognized within that line is not about status. It is about continuity.

For those of us training within this lineage, it is a reminder:

What we practice is not just ours.

We will be sharing more on this, including reflections on lineage and what it means to carry it forward.

For now, take this as a moment to listen to Okinawa Karate…
